It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the transport services were enhanced, local amenities improved, two industrial estates were developed, an additional primary school was built and a brand new secondary school was approved. These all came to fruition in Portlethen and, at last, there was a basic framework in place that was essential to serve a community that now housed thousands of people rather than the handful that were there in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Unfortunately this legacy from the 1960’s, 1970’s and early 1980’s means that the new town of Portlethen is, even today, recognised as a patchwork of housing estates, that still lacks a beating heart and a true centre. We still have some way to go to develop and catch up with Stonehaven or Banchory, our other “Kincardineshire cousins” and become a true country town like they are.
