A fisherman meeting a minister whilst making his way to his boat to go to sea thought this an omen of ill fortune, so he would just have likely turned and gone home rather than tempt fate by going to sea. Whilst on a boat the mention of the word “minister” would have upset the spirits of the sea so if there were any references to vicars, priests, ministers or parsons it would have been done under the guise of something such as “the man wi’ the bleck coat’.
